Organic essential oils

Essential oils are not actually oils, but are composed of a mixture of chemical compounds extracted from various parts of plants. Most essential oils are produced through steam distillation, where steam goes through the plant material and is then condensed back to a liquid. The liquid has two layers: the essential oil at the top, and the hydrosol (for example rose water) at the bottom: Essential oils are highly volatile which means that they readily diffuse into the air, and this is what gives them their strong smell.

Are they good for skin?

Essential oils are used for many purposes but very few of these have been properly scientifically tested. There is some evidence that certain essential oils are beneficial to skin, for example for reducing acne, whereas others appear to cause irritation or redness. However, the important aspect to consider here is that essential oils should always be used diluted and not applied directly to the skin. They are very highly concentrated substance, so although they are natural, the high concentration of these compounds can make them harmful.

At Kayan Naturkosmetiks, I have used essential oils in all of my products. However the quantity used is very low in all of the products, making it very safe and removing any danger of causing skin irritation. WIth such low concentrations, I do not believe that the essential oils I have put into my products have any particular benefits for the skin. I have rather relied on the other ingredients for this. Nonetheless the smells from the essential oils are important to add to the enjoyment of the products, and providing some aromatherapy benefits as well.

Sustainability report

Here I will turn to the conclusion from a fantastic article about the sustainability of essential oils by Amberluna Apothecary

“Whilst individual consumers and therapists are not the main culprits when it comes to harmful essential oil production practices, by making small changes and demanding a level of accountability from our suppliers, we can effect positive change within the essential oil market.

Purchasing oils in small quantities, as needed, and choosing high quality, organic ingredients sourced from trusted suppliers is a good rule of thumb. Checking the IUCN red list before buying, and eliminating use of vulnerable species will also help.

There is no need to stop using essential oils, they are wonderful for physical, mental, and spiritual health – but do stay informed so you can use them responsibly.”

If you use essential oils at home I would highly recommend reading this article in full, but as for essential oils in Kayan Naturkosmetik products, you can be assured that I have followed these recommendations

It is also important to note that essential oils are much more sustainable than synthetic alternatives which use harmful chemicals and a lot of energy to produce.
