Organic Cinnamon
What is cinnamon?
As you probably know, cinnamon is the dried bark of a tropical tree. Most of the cinnamon we buy comes from Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar or Brazil. It is used most often as a spice in baking and cooking. Cinnamon is very important in many cultures, from "Zimtstern", the traditional Christmas cookie in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, to its use in embalming dead pharaohs in ancient Egypt, to its mythical use the phoenix to make its nest from whose ashes it is reborn.
Is it good for the skin?
Cinnamon has antibacterial, anti-fungal and antioxidant properties (more about antioxidants here), however the levels of these in cinnamon powder are quite low. Although cinnamon extract (which is more concentrated than cinnamon powder) appears to reduce acne and promote wound healing, more research is needed to test the effects of cinnamon powder on skin health.
Sustainability report
Like all crops produced on a large scale, cinnamon farming is not sustainable. Large areas of cinnamon production are linked with biodiversity loss. However as cinnamon is a tree it is less damaging to the ecosystem than annual crops, and by selecting organic cinnamon, the reliance on pesticides is reduced. I bought my organic cinnamon from Migros.
Which products contain cinnamon powder?
I have only used cinnamon powder in one product: Scrub the Love
As well as the potential benefits it brings to the skin, the cinnamon powder also helps preserve the product thanks to its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Finally, although it is in a too low dose to smell it directly, the cinnamon powder in this formulation adds to the richness and depth of the scent.
