Organic beeswax

What is beeswax?

Beeswax is a natural wax produced and secreted by female worker honey bees.

  • Source: The bees excrete the wax from special glands on the underside of their abdomen.

  • Purpose: The bees chew and manipulate the wax with saliva, to build the honeycomb structure within the hive. The hexagonal cells are used to store honey and pollen (bee bread) and to house their young (brood).

  • Composition: Chemically, it is a complex substance consisting mainly of esters of fatty acids and various long-chain alcohols.

Watch this video to learn more about it and see how it is made by the bees.

Is it good for the skin?

Beeswax is very good for the skin as it helps to lock in the moisture, softens and protects the skin, while the antibacterial properties also help with wound healing.

Is it sustainable?

Beeswax is renewable and can be a highly sustainable resource, but its sustainability is entirely dependent on ethical and responsible beekeeping practices. In this case, I paid very close attention to the source of my beeswax, and selected beeswax from a trusted beekeeper, who keeps his bees on an organic farm. This makes my beeswax highly sustainable as it is renewable and sustains pollination and organic farming in our local area.

My beeswax comes from the apiaries in FiBL (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture) in Frick (AG).

Which products contain beeswax?

I have used beeswax in the following products:
