What is Jojoba oil?

Jojoba is a shrub native to Mexico and the US which is cultivated for its seeds from which the oil is extracted. Although we call it jojoba oil, due to its chemical composition it is in fact classified as a wax. Jojoba oil has a molecular structure which is very similar to the natural sebum produced by our skin. It has many properties which make it very beneficial for treating various skin conditions such as acne and eczema. Jojoba oil is:

  • Antibacterial (reduces the growth and spread of bacteria)

  • Anti-inflammatory (reduces redness and swelling)

  • Antioxidant (protects against free radicals: substances which damage DNA and cell membranes) read more about antioxidants here

  • Analgesic (reduces pain)

  • Hypoallergenic (unlikely to cause allergic reactions)

  • Non comedogenic (does not clog pores)

These properties make jojoba very well suited for use on skin with mild conditions such as acne, eczema and sunburns. When jojoba oil is applied to the skin it is absorbed into the first layers and forms a thin protective layer. This can both lock in skin moisture and protect from environmental stresses such as wind, sun and cold.

Jojoba oil sustainability:

Pros:

  • Jojoba requires very little irrigation

  • Jojoba absorbs a lot of CO2, meaning that depending on the farming and transport it can be carbon neutral or even carbon negative.

Cons:

  • Jojoba plantations are often large monocropping systems, meaning very low biodiversity on these farms.

  • Jojoba is not grown in Europe so it comes from far.

I have sourced my jojoba oil from Primabene and the batch I used in my products is from Peru.
